Research Engineer – Materials to Swedish Match

Swedish Match operations and product portfolio continue to grow and we are now looking for a Research Engineer to work across the entire development chain, from idea to finished concept, with a strong focus on materials. The position belongs to Material Development, which is part of the Product & Technology Development function. Our mission is to create innovative material solutions, specifically tailored for nicotine products, for a global market. These solutions aim to enhance the consumer experience while complying with brand, regulatory, and legal guidelines. Sustainability is also a key focus, with efforts to reduce environmental impact and further develop existing products and processes.

Main responsibilities

As a Research Engineer, you will plan and independently carry out development projects with a focus on materials. You will work throughout the entire development chain, from idea to finished concept, and together with innovation teams, marketing, and production, industrialize these solutions. Your responsibilities will include:

• Develop and produce innovative materials for nicotine products in close collaboration with internal teams, suppliers, and external experts to enable new product properties
• Generate and evaluate new ideas based on consumer insights, market trends, and internal and external requirements
• Maintain and further develop existing material solutions
• Conduct experiments and tests in the laboratory as well as document and analyze data to drive development decisions
• Ensure proper documentation and that developed solutions meet regulatory requirements for their intended markets
• Stay up to date on new technologies to implement in the development process

The position is based in Gothenburg, and you will report to Manager Product Development Material.

Your profile

We are looking for someone with a M.Sc. in Chemistry or a closely related field, with a strong interest in chemistry and in the relationship between materials and their interactions with other components. As we work cross-functionally with a focus on applied research, you need at least three years of experience in a similar role within R&D or as an industrial PhD candidate. Experience and curiosity in organic chemistry and how materials can be modified to control the release of active substances, such as in pharmaceuticals or wound care products, is considered an advantage. Fluency in English and good knowledge of Swedish are required.
